Finding the perfect weight and texture for our eye pillows took us a long time but once you feel the weight and heft of a Slow Moon eye pillow we hope you’ll agree it was time well spent.
From the outset it was important that our eye pillows used materials that were kind to the planet and so we spent a long time trialling various different fillings before launching the first prototype.
As the heaviest component of the eye pillow we also knew it was important to shop local, as we wanted to use a grain that would be easy to transport and had a connection to the land. Since Slow Moon’s design studio is based in London, our first choice was to find a British sourced filling and this led us to organic cereals – a type of grain that is extremely versatile.
We were looking for a material both for the feel and weight but also for its natural heating and cooling properties and after trialling lots of options we settled on British-grown linseed and wheat. In combination these
For many people, cereals are associated with breakfast time but here in Britain they have a long history of uses, ranging from brewing to religious ceremonies, and thanks to the British climate they grow readily in the loamy soil of the UK. This means crops can be grown with a minimum of harmful pesticides and in abundance. The temperate, somewhat damp climate in Britain may not be the best for sunbathing but it is ideally suited to growing cereals.
Having chosen the perfect two grains, the final step was to do more prototyping to find the exact mix of linseed to wheat that would give each pillow a satisfying weight and enough suppleness to help ease you into a deeper sense of calm.
